
Tom Smart
Author
Tom Smart is an acclaimed art historian, curator, author, and gallery director known for his work in preserving and interpreting Canadian art. He has led major institutions, including the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick; the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario; and the Frick Art and Historical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His curatorial practice has focused on bringing the work of contemporary First Nations and lesser-known Canadian artists to a wider audience. His books include Alex Colville: Return (Douglas & McIntyre/Art Gallery of Ontario, 2004) and Christopher Pratt: Six Decades (Firefly Books, 2013). He has also written numerous critical biographies and exhibition catalogues featuring Miller Brittain, Tom Forrestall, Mary Pratt, and Peter Clapham Sheppard.
