In 1862, just two decades after the invention of photography, Hannah Maynard established a professional studio under her own name in Victoria, B.C. An entrepreneur, an innovator and a mother of four, she operated her business for nearly fifty years. Upon her retirement in 1912, Maynard reminisced of her life in Victoria: “I think I can say with confidence that we photographed everybody in the town at one time or another.” This talk explores Maynard’s life and legacy and her vital contribution to the history of photography in Canada.
