Composition (Egg in Landscape), 2006

For a number of years the image of a duck egg featured prominently in many of Shuvinai’s landscapes. Here, the two eggs appear to be messengers, with English text, Inuktitut syllabics, and symbols drawn on their shells.


The text is poetic but cryptic. The syllabics translate as “Where are we going, who are we? Thoughts? Brain. Wondering if it’s going to open. How to spit?” The intention or meaning of textual elements in Shuvinai’s work is often difficult to determine or define. Here, they evoke a sense of wonder and cataclysm simultaneously.

Discombobulated Woman, 1995–96
