Many of the Chinese sitters in Hoy’s photographs have either consciously chosen or been posed in manners that mirror conventions of Chinese ancestor portraiture and early Hong Kong studio photography. Typically, these include frontality of the body with widely triangulated legs gripped by broadly splayed fingers, a practice that can be seen in this image. Like many of the Chinese men Hoy photographed, this man wears a Western-style business suit, but he also wears traditional Chinese shoes.
