African Canadian history through explorations of Photography in the Prairies
The images preserved by Edmonton collector Frank B. Jamerson (1922–1995) and Manitoba photographer William “Billy” Beal (1874–1968) open a vivid window onto the story of African Canadian history in Canada. Investigating these archives as primary sources, students will explore themes of migration, resilience, and belonging, connecting overlooked histories of Black Canadians to broader narratives of identity and cultural memory.
