Blue Monk, 1960

Freestanding painted sculpture by Michael Snow composed of blue sheets of paper folded in various ways and mounted on paperboard.

This freestanding painted sculpture is composed of blue sheets of paper folded in various ways and mounted on paperboard. Here Snow has given the two-dimensional, monochromatic paintings on paper a three-dimensional, sculptural shape. The pieces of paper extend beyond the edges of the paperboard, disrupting the borders of the two-dimensional support. Blue Monk is named after a composition in American jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk’s 1954 album Thelonious Monk Trio. The work thus pays homage to a pioneering jazz musician and expresses the artist’s enthusiasm for an experimental and improvisational style.
