Quits, 1960

Monochromatic black sculpture by Michael Snow. Several small canvases are held on crutch-like stands and are gradually angled more vertical as they approach a wall that the sculpture leans on.

This monochromatic black sculpture physically connects the walls on which paintings are installed and the floor on which sculptures often stand. In doing so, Quits unites the typically distinct spatial contexts in which paintings and sculptures are displayed. The work may possibly be interpreted as a series of canvases moving through three-dimensional space from the wall to the floor. Quits is equally sculpture and painting, demonstrating Snow’s investigation into the relationship between two-dimensional and three-dimensional objects.
