Composition (Red Headed Octopus), 2016

Shuvinai Ashoona, Composition (Red Headed Octopus), 2016, fineliner pen and coloured pencil on paper, 58.4 x 76.2 cm, Collection of Sabrina Maher. Photo credit: Toni Hafkenscheid.
The central figure in this scene is yet another hybrid human-animal creature with a girl sporting bright red pigtails and an octopus body with purple tentacles, some waving in the air and others firmly planted on the rocky earth. On the far left is another hybrid creature whose coiled, serpent-like body is topped with the head of a boy wearing a baseball cap. In the foreground, a wide-eyed beast resembling a walrus is sprawled on the grass. Sea animals often inspire Ashoona’s mythical creatures.
