To the Print Shop, 2013

Shuvinai Ashoona, To the Print Shop, 2013, fineliner pen and coloured pencil on paper, 72.4 x 57.2 cm, Collection of Paul and Mary-Dailey Desmarais. Photo credit: Toni Hafkenscheid.
To the Print Shop, 2013, offers an aerial view of Kinngait Studios. Part of the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, the Studio has the strongest and longest tradition of co-operative artmaking in the Arctic. Tiny figures on the street and in the large shop on the left can be seen carrying rolled up drawings. In the upper left, inside the shop, an artist hands a drawing to another person. Ashoona juxtaposes the sparsely detailed architectural interiors on the left and right with intricately rendered planets hovering in between the buildings. In characteristic fashion, the artist inserts fantastical elements into the Northern landscape, imbuing the familiar with an otherworldly dimension.
